Friday didn’t start well. I was cold and tired when I answered the alarm at 5.40 a.m. It was black and dark outside. I couldn’t face the swim to Shelley and back in the cold water. My body ached. I think I was still cold from the long swim at Balmoral yesterday. However, I do hate getting up in the dark and having to turn all the lights on. Winter is becoming an increasing struggle as I get older. I hate daylight saving as I have to get up in the dark for six months of the year. Half way through getting dressed I capitulated. On a whim, I decided I wouldn’t swim but would go straight into work. This was the first time since I had been weight-bearing that I’d not swum on a Friday. I felt a bit guilty. It’s sobering how much discipline you need to proceed through these trials of life: getting up in the morning in winter, going for a swim, going to the gym for rehab and going to work. On some winter mornings I have to steel myself to just get up and get going.
I ran through a full set of exercises in the gym today
Lunges with 5kg weight under chin | ||
---|---|---|
1. 10 x right leg | ||
2. 10x left leg | ||
Squats x 5kg weight x 20x |
||
Side lunges x 5kg weight | ||
1. 20 x right leg | ||
2. 20 x left leg | ||
Big bench | ||
1. Forward step ups | 100 x right leg | This was a big achievement as I did it without stopping |
2. Side step | 50 x right leg | |
3. Over and back | 20 x right leg | This was a killer. Still can’t do it properly |
Bench press | ||
1. Both legs | 100 x 20kg | This was probably overdoing it a bit |
2. Right leg | 10 x 10kg | |
Leg extension | ||
1. Right leg | &20 x 10kg | |
2. Both legs | 20 x 30kg | Left leg appears about three times stronger |
Leg curl | ||
1. Right leg | 30 x 10kg | |
2. Both legs | 30 x 25kg | I think this was too much for left hamstring |
Kettlebell | 0 x 14kgs | |
Hamstring bed | 50º x both legs for 5 minutes |
This was a pretty good session but my left hamstring was a bit sore, ached, when I got off the leg curl machine. I don’t think it has been getting enough work. Amazingly my damaged knee didn’t hurt at all. I seem to be having more problems with things like Achilles tendons and hamstrings than I do with the damaged leg. Tomorrow is the big day. A walk from Mosman to North Head carrying 17kgs. I’m very anxious about it.
